Establishing the Fact

The vice is tightened by the turning of the clock
It's the tapping foot, it's the reaper taking stock
Shall I put forth the effort, will I do what I can?
I've got this gap between intention and reality to span
We all race the gavel, to the sounding block

I won't avert my eyes from a passing glance
I won't bend my knee to the sovereignty of chance
I'll keep the needle on the record, put the pen upon the page
Hold myself to the fire, chain myself to the stage
I'll hitch my horse in front of happenstance

      Establishing the fact
      The evidence is stacked
      I must fulfill the pact
      It's a purpose to enact
      Establishing the fact

My soul sets a furnace to forge a song from sound
My heart holds the hammer, I will pound and pound
It's all my resolve resounding, shattering a doubt
I'll pursue most every blemish and proceed to work it out
And on the detailed devil, I'll set a well-honed hound

This tombstone of wet cement is setting with the sun
I'll leave my signature upon it, before I'm done
With the rose of my expression, a rose to pierce the grave
Persevering through the breakers, so to break a wild wave
Till I can rest assured, the day is won

      Establishing the fact
      The evidence is stacked
      I must fulfill the pact
      It's a purpose to enact
